ISO 9001:2015 Insight: Top Management Leadership and Commitment

ISO 9001:2015 Clause 5 requires Top Management to demonstrate leadership and commitment with respect to the Quality Management System (QMS) and conformance to this requirement will be verified by the auditors as part of the certification/re-certification cycle.

Check out this video which provides an overview of Quality Management Principle 2 – Leadership under ISO 9001:2015:

Demonstrating leadership and commitment requires Top Management to become more actively involved with the QMS by ensuring that quality becomes embedded in the day to day business operations, and is not just seen as an “Add-on”.  Given that the purpose of a QMS is to enable an organization to deliver products and services required by its customers, to their satisfaction, consistently, effectively and efficiently, it makes sense that Top Management take a much more “hands-on” approach to the QMS and not just delegate to Quality.

Actions that Top Management can take to demonstrate leadership and commitment include:

  • Taking accountability for the effectiveness of the QMS by ensuring that it achieves its intended results in line with the organizations strategic goals
  • Establishing a quality policy and objectives which are compatible with the context and strategic direction of the organisation
  • Promoting the use of the process approach and of risk-based thinking by ensuring effective interaction of the organizations processes and ensuring that risks and opportunities to product and service conformity and customer satisfaction are addressed
  • Communicating via internal meetings, personal discussions, email etc the value and benefits of the QMS and of conforming to the QMS requirements
  • Engaging, directing and supporting persons to contribute to the effectiveness of the QMS
  • Promoting improvement by ensuring that information and recommendations from audits, data analysis and management reviews are communicated to responsible persons and implemented
  • Supporting other management roles in demonstrating their leadership by providing support, mentoring and guidance
  • Ensuring that current and projected workloads and schedules are monitored so that adequate resources (persons, tools, equipment etc.) are provided, when and where needed

ISO 9001:2015 makes it clear that Top Management involvement with the QMS isn’t optional.
